Club Champs 200m Free and 200m Back (1st March 2005)
Thirty five Harlow Penguin swimmers competed in the first of the 200m distance races. There was some excellent individual performances with many swimmers of all ages achieving personal best times. Our youngest swimmer was Matthew Walton at only 8 who competed with older boys but shows a promising future. Special thanks to Nicole for competing who was told today by her teacher she has a GSCE mock exam tomorrow (Wednesday) but still came and competed!!
The evening started well for Annie Groome who won the Junior girls 200m freestyle race in a time of 2.36:36. She was closely followed by Jenna Batorski and Emily Sutton. Ria Melvin was the fastest 9 year old swimming a very good race in a time of 3.03:50.
The Junior boys 200m freestyle was won by Alex Francey in a time of 2.32:53. Oliver Taffs came second beating close foe Senner Koskocan into third place. Harry Newman secured 4th place just beating close rivals Chris Stevens and Ben Want.
Senior girls 200m freestyle was won by Kate Burley in a time of 2.13:96. Kaz Melvin out touched Cydney Newman for second and third places respectively. Louise Kendall came in 4th with Ruby, Jodie, Nicole, Holly and Antonia all beating their entry times so hopefully securing personal bests this evening.
Senior boys 200m freestyle was won by Karl Batorski (1.59:19) with Mark St Clare securing 2nd place in front of Tom Burley who came 3rd.
Annie Groome achieved her second outright win of the evening by coming first in the 200m Junior Girls backstroke race. She won by 13 seconds over second place Jenna Batorski with Emily Sutton securing the third position. Young Ria Melvin had a great race but unfortunately was disqualified due to her turn.
Alex Francey was also the Junior boys champion for 200m backstroke. He beat second place Chris Stevens by 3 seconds but Chris only just out touched third place Senner and fourth place Oliver Taffs. Ben got his own back on Harry Newman by securing 5th place with Harry achieving 6th. Our other three boys of Joshua Blake, Ryan Wolfe and John Reynolds were all unfortunately disqualified as they only swam 150m and not the required 200m!!!
Kaz Melvin secured the Senior girls 200m backstroke title winning by 10 seconds over second place Cydney Newman. Ruby Groome narrowly missed that second place by only 0.2 of a second!!
The Senior Boys title was won by Karl in a time of 2.17:31. Mark St Clare came second with impressive Craig Warwick beating both Matt Cooper and Tom Burley to secure a deserved third place.
