Junior Speedo (Round 3 - Final) Division 2 - June 5th 2005

Our Junior Speedo team missing Ben Want, Oliver Taffs and Ellis Foot
Harlow Penguins Junior team were ranked 6th prior to the Division 2 Final and that's where we finished at the end of the day. However, they certainly were good enough and should have come 5th or even 4th had there been fewer disqualifications (we had 8 in all!! - 4 because I had to swim overage swimmers).
Our small team of only 22 swimmers (weakened by a broken arm, swimmers on holiday, swimmers at Southern County finals and one no show) swam gallantly at Waltham Forest against five other top teams in our league of twelve swimming clubs. Teams from Ruislip Northwood (1st 232 points), Kingston Royals (2nd 215 points), Hoddesdon (3rd 168 points), Anaconda (4th 136 points) and Colchester (5th 129 points) were just a little bit too strong for us - our total at the end was 128 points.
Nevertheless we certainly competed well and had lots of fine swims. We managed 5 outright wins in the 49 races - there were two by Annie Groome (50m fly and 50m back), and one each by Jenna Batorski (50m breast), Luke Marioni (50m breast) and Oliver Taffs (50m free). We also competed well to get 4 seconds, 5 thirds, 11 fourths, 7 fifths and 9 sixths.
At the end of the Gala our two Junior Captains (for the day), Jenna Batorski and Harry Newman, collected our sixth place trophy clapped and cheered on by their very smart looking but tired team mates. Junior Speedo is finished for another season and will restart April 2006 (approximately). Between now and then there will be more time trials plus emphasis placed on relay takeovers, dives and finishes. This Junior Speedo final is also the last time we saw Jenna, Annie, Harry and Ben compete at this level as next season they are too old!!
