Bonne Sante Trophy Gala (29th April 2006)

Harlow Penguins proved its strength in depth when a squad of swimmers including 10 making debut swims finished narrowly third out of four teams. Places 2,3 and 4 were separated by 7 points where Penguins were six points behind second place (Killerwhales) and one BIG point from last (Bishops Stortford SC Blue team).

We swam at the excellent pool at Bishops Stortford college. Unfortunately spectator conditions were not too great as the loud crowd suffered due to the heat.

I was unable to field a full squad with many swimmers taking advantage of the long weekend - nevertheless lots of Penguins swam up in age group and swam very well too.

In the 41 races we had 10 first, 5 seconds, 9 thirds, 8 fourths and 9 disqualifications (of which 5 were for swimming two fast!!!). If two of my disqualifications had not occurred Harlow Penguins would have secured second place!!!!!

The swimmers were very keen, extremely well behaved and tried their hardest. The only disappointing part of the evening was the number of swimmers who dived and goggles fell off (at least 5)!! Our swimmers must learn to tighten these up during warm up sessions and while waiting for races.

Our individual winners were (race order): James Padfield (10 yrs 50m free), Danielle Williamson (11 yrs 50m back), Adam Dunkley (12 yrs 50m breast), Victoria Malcolm (11 yrs 50m fly), Rosie Baker (10 yrs 50m back), Shannen Ellis (11 yrs 50m breast) and Jack Birch (11 yrs 50m breast). My relay winners were boys 9yrs 4x 25m medley AND 9yrs 4x 25m free  (Joe Tucker, Mason Arnold, James and Jack Alexander) and the girls 9yrs 4x 25m medley (Victoria, Danielle, Shannen and Sadie Clifton).

I am afraid due to circumstances beyond my control I was unable to arrange anyone to do splits - I do apologise. However a BIG thanks must go to the following people who helped us out on poolside - David Dunkley (Timekeeper), Eric (starter), Harry "Junior Legend" Newman (Team manager), Senner "wish I was swimming" Koskocan (relay takeover) and Ryan "pretty boy" Budd (relay takeovers)
