Essex Masters Championships 2011

Penguins Masters squad of “has been’s” produced some outstanding performances at the Essex County Master Championship’s on Saturday 7 May at Blackshot’s pool, as a result the club now has 5 County Champions albeit in age groups where most swimmers will have learned that the aging process cannot be stopped.

Paula Reynolds had a fair attempt at proving that theory wrong by producing an outstanding 1:16.58 to win the 100m backstroke, only to inform us that this was only 2 secs outside her best ever and that she could probably have gone faster! That said, she tried to put the “could have tried harder” theory to the test in the 100m IM where Paula prevailed again to win in a time of 1:17.37 and there was hope for the rest of us as she seemed?? to be tiring up the last length. Paula gained a third success in the 50m backstroke in a time of 35.61. These feat’s were closely followed by Alan Canham in the 50m Butterfly who won in a time of 42:00, but at a mere 71 years young, Alan really should know better. Not to be outdone and despite moaning all-day about not being able to get into her rhythm??, Sarah Stringer produced a 1:16:28 in the 100m Freestyle to bring home another golden gong.

Sarah also added to her medal collection with three silvers, in the 200m Freestyle (2:46.16), 100m IM (1:24.73) and 50m Freestyle (32.06). Other Masters performances of note were Nick Johnson’s silver medals in the 50m Butterfly in a time of 32.34 and 100m Freestyle in 1:08.59, Martin Stringer’s 33.48, gained silver in the 50m butterfly and 40.04 was enough for bronze in the 50m Breaststroke.

Harlow Penguin Masters also entered several mixed relay teams which all performed well, most notably the 200+ years (yes – 200!!) where in the final race of the evening the Penguins medley squad of Paula Reynolds (back), Alan Canham (Brst), Martin Stringer (Fly) and Sarah Stringer (Free) were touched out by a strong Romford squad, who train 6 days a week!
