Thurrock County Qualifier 15th Jan 2012 Club sent probably the biggest squad for some time to an Open meet this weekend, as with all such events there are some inevitable high and lows and when it is realistically the last chance to qualify for County the “nearly’s” are really hard to swallow especially when you are talking fractions of seconds, a couple I know are going to Stortford next week to have a last minute bash. There were some real high’s, not least those provided by Mason Arnold and Tomas Stevens who literally went head to head in several races and knocked 7 bells out of each other in most of them, Tomas prevailed (perhaps not surprisingly) in the back stroke, and used his wingspan to great effect in the 50m Fly where on the stretch he snatched victory. Mason not to be outdone came through on the Freestyle events and achieved his qualifying time for the 100m Free, 100m Back, 100m Fly and possibly the biggest surprise 200m Free. The most welcome result of the weekend was Amy Edwards, who kept her feet firmly on the block this week and turned last weeks disappointment into this weeks “New County Swimmer” qualifying in the 50m Free. Bradley turned up for just 3 events and duly added 100m Fly, 50m Brst and 100m Breast to his county qualifying list which I believe totals 9 events! All told there, I believe there were 12 more County events qualified for, it was great to see some of the younger swimmers coming through as well, Silvo (200 IM), Owen Stringer (200m Brst) and Ellie Hind (200m Brst) all adding more events to their list of qualifying times. In total, there were 91 swims, 12 new county times, 7 improved county times and 52 PB’s. Most importantly Mason and Tomas have also got a regional qualifying time in the 100m Free, details are attached!
